The attack of the killer automata
The concept behind Five Nights at Freddy's, adapted from a popular PC game, is to put you in the shoes of the brand new security guard of a chain of pizza restaurants. Without knowing what to expect, you're going to have to survive your night at work without getting eaten up .
Normally, of course, that wouldn't be a problem. But Freddy Fazbear's Pizzas is not just any restaurant. It houses a bunch of automatons in the form of stuffed animals that transform into demonic creatures as soon as the restaurant closes. Their hobby: trying to devour people's brains before making costumes out of them. We are far from Ronald McDonald and his friends at McDonaldLand.
When you start the game, you have very little info other than an audio message from a traumatized ex-employee describing the dangers of working at Freddy's.
Sitting in your office, you must control the 11 security cameras arranged in the restaurant. You need to detect any sign of movement from one of the animal automatons, which at first glance appear extinct. If you catch one of these funny critters moving around, you'll need to turn on one of the office lights to see if they aren't on their way to eat your eyes. If one of them is at the door, click the button to slam it as fast as possible.
Controlling the cameras, turning on the lights, and closing the doors all cost you electricity , which is in short supply. Your night starts at midnight and ends at 6 a.m., and you need to save energy to reach the end of your living shift, otherwise one of the creatures may enter your office. Each night lasts about eight or nine minutes in real time.
Five Nights at Freddy's first night on call seems fairly easy, as you'll see little movement from the characters, although when it does, it's quite worrying. The closer you get to the fifth night, the more activeChica the Chicken, Bonnie the Rabbit, Foxy the Pirate Fox and the enigmatic Freddy Fazbear are. For some of the characters, you will be able to detect repeating routines and rules for predicting their movements. On the other hand, Freddy, isolated from the rest of the troop behind a curtain, does not seem to follow any rules and his movements are quite unpredictable.
All alone in the dark
To win at Five Nights at Freddy's, you have to avoid leaving the cameras and lights running, and slamming the doors at the slightest noise. Most of the time, you will have to stay on top of your nerves in the dark so as not to waste electricity, even if you feel vulnerable and scared.
The controls are very simple . You can look to the right or left by clicking on one side of the screen, and turn on the hall lights and doors using the corresponding buttons. Security cameras can be accessed by clicking the big button at the bottom of the screen.
The graphics of Five Nights at Freddy's are successful and out of the ordinary. The game combines a pixelated all-MS-DOS interface with the terrifying look of the Four PLCs. The spikes of terror are very well rendered. If one of the characters enters your office, you discover it by its sudden appearance on the screen, accompanied by a shrill cry that will make you take off a few centimeters from your seat.
The sound effects of Five Nights at Freddy's add to the scary atmosphere. Whether it's the crackle and hiss of cameras or the ominous footsteps, every element of the soundtrack is calibrated to terrify you.
Five nights in hell
Five Nights at Freddy's is one of the most terrifying PC games I have ever played. If you're brave enough to test it, prepare to go through times of tension and dread.
